ECU tuning stages, demystified
Stage 1, 2, 3 — what the numbers actually mean for your engine.

Stage 1 — software only
A reflash of the engine map with no hardware changes. Typically a 20-30% bump in power, sharper throttle, and sometimes better economy. There's no physical evidence of modification unless someone reads the ECU.
Stage 2 — map plus bolt-ons
The remap is re-tuned to suit supporting hardware: intake, exhaust, and often uprated injectors. More air and fuel let the map safely ask for more.
Stage 3 — major hardware
Turbo upgrades, forged internals, bigger fueling — and a custom tune written for that specific build. Big gains, big trade-offs.
The honest caveat
Every stage trades reliability, warranty, and sometimes drivability for power. Use a reputable tuner and match supporting mods, or you'll pay for the map in clutch and turbo life.
